The county was named after Cyrus Luce, Governor of Michigan from 1887-90. Luce County is mostly wilderness with about 40% swampland. John Newberry founded the Vulcan Furnace Company. Industries included timber, and farming. In 1903, in Newberry, the Upper Peninsula Hospital for the Insane and Feeble Minded opened. Today it is known as Newberry Regional Mental Health Center. Tourists visit the Tahquamenon Falls each year. |
