Jackson county and the City of Jackson were named after President Andrew Jackson. Jackson county was originally inhabited by Kickapoo, Pottawatomie, shawnee, Fox and Sac Indians. The first settlement was in 1829 with Horace Blackman. by 1830 there were 24 families, mostly from New York and Ann Arbor, settled. The world's largest prison (Jackson State Prison) was built in Jackson in 1838. In 1900 Buick Motors was started. The city of Jackson is a leading industrial center for metal products, petroleum and sandstone. |
