French missionaries came in the mid 1600's to the Bay de Noc. The first white settler was a fur trader settling on the Escanaba River. Then followed lumberman who build sawmills along the rivers. This was also a good area for fishing. Escanaba was a major mining town for iron ore which is still today important. Over half of Delta County is contained in the Hiawatha National Forest. Because of over 140 inland lakes and 144 miles of Lake Michigan coastline, makes it a prime spot for water recreation and fishing. Also important is paper production, metal fabrication and tourism. An automated light was built in 1938 to mark the entrance to the harbor at Escanaba from Lake Michigan. |
