Frenchmen were the first to arrive at this County. Trappers stopped at the county's northern shore, near the mouth of the Cheboygan River, which is now known as the city of Cheboygan. The first settlers arrived in 1844, and until the first sawmill was built in the 1870's, the growth was slow. Michigan's fourth and fifth largest lakes are located in Cheboygan county, Burt and Mullett Lakes. Cheboygan County's main industries are tourism, farming, commercial fishing, paper, wood, and metal fabrication and limestone.
