In 1847 James Strang, an elder o f the Mormon church, founded a religious colony on Beaver Island. After his assassination in 1856 the colony dissolved. With the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad in the 1870's the county began to grow. Lumbering attracted settlers. Tourism became an important industry. Boyne City hosts a national mushroom picking championship in May, and Charlevoix hosts an apple festival in the Fall. |
