Although there was a settler prior, settlement began in 1854 when a vessel was forced to land here during a storm. The Betsie River offered a good harbor for lake vessels. Population growth occurred with lumbering in the area and steam powered saw mills were erected. In 1892 a ship carrying railroad freight cars crossed the water at Frankfort. Today the car ferry still operates. Home of the famous Crystal Mountain Ski Area. |
